Noiseless pickups Ultra Jazz Bass V
Two Ultra Noiseless Vintage Jazz Bass pickups fill out the sound, along with an active preamp to color it. “We worked with Stan Cody—who is an in-house electronics wizard at Fender— and re-voiced the EQ points,” said Giffin. The result? Endless tonal possibilities with zero noise or hum.
Advanced electronics
The preamp can be toggled active or passive. The other controls on the American Ultra J Bass are also ultra-modern. Pickup selects are made with a pan pot. Other sounds can be found via a treble boost/cut, midrange boost/cut and a bass boost/cut.
New neck shape
The new American Ultra neck has a modern-D profile. “This finally makes it super comfortable and feels like a big step forward,” said Giffin. The necks are finished with satin urethane, which are “smoother and less sticky than the previous generation.”
New neck contour
A first for Fender, the American Ultra’s tapered neck heel allows for easier access to those high frets. “We worked with the engineers in the factory to make sure it was still structurally stable and had integrity, but was as thin as we could get it,” said Giffin. “It’s a pretty significant reduction in the bulk right at the base of the neck.”
